For many years, I thought Pilates was strange and slightly terrifying. What was all that equipment for? But after an injury in 2019, I found myself looking for something to restore me to balance and strength. I ended up in a mat class that was taught by a friend of mine. Because not much was helping at that point, I was surprised that my injury felt better afterwards. The mat class was ending for the summer and my friend recommended a Pilates studio nearby.
That was how I ended up at Core Pilates in Wellness in Spokane, Washington. I took 10 private sessions with the studio owner and then gradually eased into classes. It was slow going at first and I had a hard time directing my body to do what the instructor was asking. I often found my brain was as tired as my body after class. After about six months of regular practice, it started making sense. I gradually increased my class attendance until I was regularly doing four classes per week with several different instructors. Many other forms of exercise that I tried had caused strain on my body and I often got to a plateau. With Pilates, I found I could continue to build strength, flexibility and endurance, without any joint pain or muscle injury.
I left Spokane in the summer of 2022, after selling an apartment rental business. I travelled for seven months and one of my guiding principles for the trip was that I had to do Pilates in person at least three times per week, wherever I was. During that time, I practiced at 23 different studios throughout the US and Ontario. It was a wonderful way to connect with the different places I was visiting and to deepen my understanding of Pilates. I also learned a great deal about the different ways to run a studio.
When the opportunity recently presented itself to open a Pilates studio serving downtown Savannah, I decided to take it. I am well into my Comprehensive Pilates Instructor Certification program through Balanced Body and am teaching classes at the studio.
